FirstBank Ghana Sees Lower Default Risk as Rate Cuts Boost SME Credit and Digital Growth

FirstBank Ghana has expressed optimism about improved credit performance in the banking sector, citing declining interest rates as a key driver of stronger loan repayment and increased access to finance for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Managing Director of FirstBank Ghana, Mr Victor Yaw Asante, said the easing interest rate environment was creating a more favourable climate for borrowers, reducing the likelihood of loan defaults and improving business viability.

He made the remarks during the FirstBank Ghana 2026 Health Walk held at the bank’s Head Office in Accra, an event that brought together staff, customers and key stakeholders as part of activities marking the bank’s 30th anniversary in Ghana.

Mr Asante welcomed the Bank of Ghana’s ongoing monetary easing cycle, noting that lower rates directly enhanced borrowers’ capacity to service their loans. According to him, banks benefit when interest rates fall, as customers are better positioned to meet their repayment obligations.

Recent figures from the Bank of Ghana show that the Monetary Policy Rate has declined sharply from 27.7 per cent in late 2024 to 18.0 per cent as at November 2025, with analysts forecasting a further reduction to around 15.0 per cent by mid-2026.

Mr Asante said the rate cuts had already translated into improved access to credit for SMEs and expressed confidence that further reductions could follow when the Monetary Policy Committee meets in the coming weeks.

He commended the central bank for its policy interventions, expressing optimism that continued easing would result in lower prime lending and overnight rates, ultimately benefiting consumers and businesses alike.

Beyond macroeconomic developments, the Managing Director reaffirmed FirstBank Ghana’s commitment to supporting businesses with tailored financial solutions aligned with prevailing economic conditions. He said the bank’s “You First” philosophy remained central to its operations, guiding its customer-focused approach over the past three decades.

Looking ahead, Mr Asante said the next phase of the bank’s growth would be driven by innovation and digital transformation, with a stronger integration of branch-based services and convenient digital platforms to support both personal and business banking needs.

He also addressed speculation about a potential listing of FirstBank Ghana on the Ghana Stock Exchange, noting that while the bank is already listed through its parent company on the Nigerian Exchange, a local listing could be considered within the next two years as part of efforts to expand its capital base.
