Controversy Erupts Over Afua Asantewaa’s Sing-A-Thon Support Claims
A fresh controversy has emerged between Guinness World Record sing-a-thon contender Afua Asantewaa and officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over claims regarding the level of support she received from the government during her record attempt.
In a recent interview on Accra FM, Asantewaa stated that the only assistance she received from the then NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was sore throat medicine, implying that her efforts were largely unsupported by the government.
However, her comments have sparked a strong reaction from NPP National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, who has dismissed her claims as false and ungrateful.
“This lady is not being truthful,” Mustapha said. “During her first sing-a-thon attempt in Accra, Dr. Bawumia not only visited her but also provided financial and logistical support. He donated GHC20,000 in cash, along with packs of Papaye food, bottled water, and soft drinks to her team. I personally delivered the donation to her husband and father.”
Mustapha also revealed that following the event, Asantewaa and her family personally visited Dr. Bawumia to express their gratitude. As a further gesture of support, he said the Vice President sponsored a vacation for her at Senchi.
The disagreement has fueled debate on social media, with some defending Asantewaa’s claims, while others criticize her for allegedly downplaying the support she received.
With both sides standing firm on their positions, the controversy raises broader questions about political influence, expectations of support for public figures, and the role of government in backing individual initiatives.
Neither Asantewaa nor Dr. Bawumia has officially responded to the latest statements.
