Ghana has emerged as a key growth market within the MTN Group, with plans to channel $1.1 billion into expanding digital and financial services infrastructure over the next three years.
The announcement was made in Accra by Ralph Mupita, President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, during a working visit aimed at engaging regulators, policymakers and company leadership.
The fresh investment — an acceleration from the $1 billion spent over the past five years — signals increased confidence in Ghana’s digital economy and positions MTN Ghana as one of the Group’s top-tier subsidiaries.
Ghana Elevated Within the Group
Mr Mupita revealed that MTN Ghana would now be classified as the Group’s “third major subsidiary,” citing its strong 2025 performance and consistent growth trajectory.
“We are pleased with what we have seen the MTN Ghana business do…the future is exciting and we want to allocate more capital in Ghana because we think capital allocation would have more socio-economic impact,” he said.
The investment will focus on expanding network infrastructure, improving service quality — particularly in peri-urban and rural areas — and deepening Mobile Money penetration. The company plans to roll out 500 new network sites this year alone to address service gaps.
Digital and Financial Inclusion at the Core
Engagements during the visit included meetings with the Bank of Ghana, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and the Ministry of Communication, reinforcing MTN’s intent to align with national digital transformation goals.
Beyond infrastructure, the Group CEO highlighted efforts to strengthen fraud detection in the Mobile Money ecosystem using Artificial Intelligence and other technological innovations. He also underscored opportunities to expand digital and financial inclusion, positioning MTN as a long-term partner in Ghana’s development agenda.
Betting on Youth and Innovation
MTN says it will also support government initiatives to boost digital skills, with a focus on empowering young people to become content creators rather than passive consumers in the digital economy.
Mr Ebenezer Asante, Senior Vice President of MTN Ghana, noted that the company has recorded consistent growth over the past decade and continues to modernise its customer base by driving smartphone adoption and fintech expansion.
“Digital is growing, fintech is growing…This is a business on multiple legs and all the legs are growing,” he said, adding that the company remains focused on transformation even as it consolidates current gains.
With the new capital injection and strategic elevation within the Group, MTN Ghana is positioning itself not just as a telecom operator, but as a central pillar in Ghana’s digital and financial services ecosystem.
