Ghana and Burkina Faso Reset Relations with Broad Security and Border Pact

Ghana and Burkina Faso have renewed their bilateral ties with the signing of seven key agreements aimed at reinforcing border governance, improving transport connectivity and strengthening joint security efforts amid rising regional threats.

The accords were concluded at the end of a revived session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which had been dormant for six years. The reactivation signals a deliberate reset in relations between the two neighbouring states, with both sides pledging closer coordination on shared challenges.

The agreements span multiple sectors, including the mutual recognition of national driver’s licences, transport and road transit cooperation, and a framework for cross-border collaboration. The two countries also signed memoranda establishing periodic consultations between border authorities and creating a joint commission to reaffirm their common boundary.

Security featured prominently in the discussions. Both governments jointly condemned recent terrorist attacks in the sub-region and agreed to develop a new security framework to combat terrorism and violent extremism. The pact also includes cooperation in tackling illicit cultivation, drug production and trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances.

Another major outcome of the talks was a new partnership on disaster prevention and humanitarian response, with specific attention to the recurring spillage of the Bagré Dam, which frequently affects downstream communities in Ghana.

The high-level engagements involved meetings with Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, and Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré. Both sides described the discussions as open and forward-looking, reaffirming their commitment to deepening long-standing ties.

The renewed cooperation builds on earlier engagements between President John Dramani Mahama and Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, whose meetings last year laid the groundwork for revitalising the PJCC.

Ghana’s delegation expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended during the two-day official visit, underscoring the importance both nations attach to their shared history, security cooperation and collective development goals.
