The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has dismissed as misleading recent media headlines suggesting it intends to deploy staff abroad to provide driver licensing services in selected countries.
In a statement issued on February 26, 2026, the Authority explained that it has entered into an arrangement with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry to collaborate with Ghanaian embassies to extend limited services to citizens living overseas.
According to the DVLA, the initiative will allow qualified Ghanaians domiciled abroad to access selected services, including the issuance of International Driver’s Permits and the renewal of Ghanaian driver’s licences.
The pilot phase of the programme will be rolled out in the United States of America, Canada, Germany, Netherlands and at Ghana’s High Commission in the United Kingdom.
The Authority clarified that under the arrangement, embassy staff will receive training to verify applicants’ documents before forwarding them to the DVLA in Ghana for processing. Once processed, the documents will be returned to the respective embassies for collection by applicants.
Management stressed that the initiative does not involve posting DVLA staff to work at embassies abroad, contrary to some media reports.
The DVLA reaffirmed its commitment to bringing services closer to Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, to improve compliance and reduce defaults. It also encouraged media outlets and members of the public to contact its Corporate Affairs Department for accurate information to avoid misreporting.
