The Ghana Institute of Engineers (GHIE) has announced plans to establish an Engineering Village in Assin Kushea, Central Region, aimed at advancing engineering education, innovation, and skills development for Ghana’s youth.
The project follows the transfer of 10.71 acres of land by Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Paramount Chief of the Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area, and his Council of Elders, underscoring a partnership between traditional authorities, the local community, and professional institutions.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Chief described the initiative as a strategic investment in human capital, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and likened it to planting a tree whose benefits will extend to future generations.
Receiving the land on behalf of GHIE, President Ludwig Annang Hesse called the project a community-driven development model and encouraged young people to take advantage of the opportunities it will create in engineering and applied sciences.
The multi-functional Engineering Village is planned to feature:
An industrial park
Engineering museum
Conference and training centre
Eco-park and recreational spaces
Residential accommodation
Administrative offices and support services
GHIE also intends to collaborate with local basic schools, providing practical STEM learning experiences including robotics and applied technical skills aligned with the Ghana Education Service curriculum. As part of this, DEXT Science kits were presented to schools to support hands-on science education.
The ceremony included the presentation of land documents, unveiling of a GHIE signpost, and commemorative tree planting, with participation from school children, traditional leaders, GHIE officials, and professionals from Ghana Water Company, Telecel Ghana, VRA, MTN Ghana, ECG, and consulting firms.
The initiative signals GHIE’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers in Ghana and positioning the Assin community as a hub for STEM education and innovation.
