The Royal Asona Family of Agona Swedru has formally notified the Swedruman Council of Chiefs, led by Nana Kweku Esieni V, Nifahene and Regent, of the passing of Nana Dr. Bright Oduro Kwarteng and the upcoming 40-day mourning observance.
According to Mr. Paul Arthur, spokesperson for the Royal Asona Family, the 40-day celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The family confirmed that Nana Dr. Bright Oduro Kwarteng had been chosen to succeed the late Swedruhene, Nana Kobena Botwe II, and was set to be installed with the stool name Okokodurfo Kojo Nyarko II.
Abusuapanyin Kweku Essuon disclosed that Nana Oduro Kwarteng fell ill in late 2024 and was flown to the United Kingdom for medical care. Tragically, he passed away on November 4, 2025, sending the Agona Swedru community into deep mourning.
Nana Oduro Kwarteng held several distinguished roles, including former Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture under President John Mahama’s first administration. He also served as a senior lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and was the 2020 aspiring National Chairman of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP).
Family members fondly remembered him as a supportive uncle who offered guidance and encouragement. Ms. Faustina Egyiriba Boison, one of his nieces, said, “He will forever be remembered for his kindness and wisdom, and his legacy will live on in our family.”
The announcement marks a significant moment for Agona Swedru, as the community prepares to honor the late chief’s contributions to public service, education, and political leadership.
