The Black Queens will have to wait longer for their next chance at glory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a major rescheduling of the 2026 tournament.
Originally slated for March 17 to April 3, the competition in Morocco has been postponed to July 25 – August 16, 2026, due to “unforeseen circumstances,” CAF said in a Thursday statement following consultations with FIFA and other stakeholders.
“The decision ensures the success of this important women’s competition in light of certain unforeseen circumstances,” CAF added, noting that preparations are ongoing and confident of a successful tournament.
The change disrupts training and logistical plans for participating national teams, including Ghana, whose Black Queens have been training in the UAE ahead of the original dates. The team, bronze medalists at last year’s edition, now face a longer buildup as they aim to improve on their previous performance.
Coaches and players will need to adjust schedules, fitness programs, and travel plans, potentially affecting team momentum ahead of the summer competition.
