The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has released funding allocated to the Black Challenge, Ghana’s National Amputee Football Team, under its sponsorship agreement with Gold Fields Ghana Limited to strengthen preparations for the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup.
The move forms part of efforts to ensure the team receives the financial and logistical support needed to prepare adequately for the global competition.
Gold Fields Ghana pledged US$5 million over two years after becoming an Official Partner of the GFA, with US$500,000 specifically earmarked for the Black Challenge during the period.
The partnership was announced on May 8, 2026, at the company’s headquarters in Accra, following negotiations led by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku.
The allocation is expected to cover essential expenses, including accommodation, feeding, flight tickets and allowances, as the team intensifies its preparations for the tournament.
To coordinate the use of the funds and ensure they address the team’s needs, the GFA has engaged the Ghana Paralympic Committee and other stakeholders in amputee football.
The Association has also stepped up its direct engagement with the players. GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo has visited training sessions on several occasions to assess the team’s progress and discuss its preparations.
As part of the logistical support, the GFA has supplied more than 30 footballs and training cones to facilitate training activities.
During his latest visit, Mr Harrison Addo assured the players that they would receive official national team jerseys bearing their names, as well as camp wear and training kits carrying Gold Fields Ghana’s sponsorship branding.
The GFA has additionally covered visa fees for the team’s travel to Turkey and Mexico as part of the preparation programme.
Recognising the players’ medical needs, the Association has held discussions on plans to engage two physiotherapists and a doctor to strengthen medical support throughout the preparation period.
The GFA is also working with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Paralympic Committee to finalise arrangements for the team’s participation in the World Cup.
Beyond the Black Challenge, the Gold Fields Ghana sponsorship agreement provides support for the Black Stars, the Black Queens and the Women’s Premier League.
The GFA says its collaboration with sponsors and other stakeholders is aimed at ensuring that the Black Challenge receives the financial, technical and logistical assistance required to prepare for the 2026 tournament and represent Ghana competitively.
