Growing concerns over the safety of mobile money operators have resurfaced following a daring armed robbery attack in Ziope in the Volta Region.
Two unidentified men carried out the attack on a mobile money shop near the Agape Filling Station on the evening of April 7, making away with nearly GH¢90,000. The robbers reportedly used gunfire to intimidate bystanders, allowing them to execute the operation within minutes.
According to the shop owner, Mawutor Mensah, one suspect remained outside firing warning shots while the other entered the shop and demanded cash at gunpoint. The attackers later fled on a motorbike.
Although no injuries were recorded, the incident has left operators shaken and heightened fears among vendors, many of whom say such attacks are becoming increasingly common.
Police at the local station have confirmed the incident and say investigations are ongoing, appealing to the public for information to help track down the suspects.
Residents in the area, traditionally known for its calm environment, expressed shock and called for increased police patrols, especially during evening hours. They also urged stronger collaboration between authorities and mobile money operators to improve security.
Some community members are advising vendors to adopt precautionary measures, including limiting cash held at shops and investing in surveillance systems, as concerns grow over a pattern of similar attacks across the country.
The robbery underscores a broader security challenge facing mobile money businesses, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced protection measures and coordinated responses from both law enforcement and local communities.
