Harry Kane Feels Overlooked Despite Goalscoring Brilliance

England captain Harry Kane has admitted that his prolific goal record is often taken for granted, suggesting that people have become “bored” of his consistency both for club and country.

The 31-year-old striker, who remains England’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals, will lead the Three Lions in their opening World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley. Despite his remarkable achievements, Kane feels his performances are sometimes undervalued.

Comparing his situation to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who set absurdly high standards during their careers, Kane explained how sustained excellence can sometimes lead to diminished recognition.

“It’s like when Ronaldo and Messi were scoring crazy numbers, and the next season they’d hit 40 instead of 50—suddenly, people would say they were having a bad season,” Kane said.

“Maybe it’s the same with me and England. If I score against Albania or Latvia, people just expect it, so it’s not talked about as much.”

Kane also acknowledged that age might play a factor in the perception of his performances:

“If I was 25 and doing what I’m doing now, the excitement around me would probably be different. Maybe people just get a little bored of what you do, but I’m certainly not bored.”

Despite netting 21 goals in 24 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich this season, Kane has still faced criticism in Germany over his impact at the club.

While admitting that outside opinions can be frustrating, he insists he no longer allows negativity to affect him.

“When I was younger, I listened to criticism more than I do now. I criticise myself more than anyone else ever could, but I also use it as fuel to prove people wrong,” he said.

Kane also pointed out the overreaction culture in modern football, where a short goal drought can lead to scrutiny, while a scoring streak can suddenly spark Ballon d’Or conversations.

“I feel like the gap between highs and lows is too extreme. If you don’t score for a couple of games, people say you’re not sharp enough. If you do, suddenly you’re a Ballon d’Or contender.”

Kane believes that his move to Bayern Munich in 2023 has enhanced his global reputation and put him in Ballon d’Or contention—an accolade no English player has won since Michael Owen in 2001.

“Just being at a club like Bayern has pushed me even more, both in terms of confidence and responsibility,” he said.

He also acknowledged that winning major trophies will be the key to being considered for football’s most prestigious individual award.

“Last season, I scored over 40 goals, but without team trophies, I was never going to win the Ballon d’Or. This year, those opportunities are there. Winning titles while scoring 40+ goals—that’s what it takes to be in the conversation.”

As Kane prepares to lead England under new boss Thomas Tuchel, his focus remains on proving doubters wrong and chasing football’s biggest prizes, both individually and collectively.
