Quick action by residents of Otoase has led to the arrest of a suspect in a suspected electricity infrastructure vandalism case, highlighting the growing role of community vigilance in protecting public assets.
The suspect, Evans Adanu, a 20-year-old motorcycle rider, was apprehended after residents responded to unusual activity near a damaged transformer that had caused a power outage in the area.
The case is currently before the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District Court, which granted the accused bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties after he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including interference with the distribution system of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
According to prosecutors, the incident involved the deliberate dislodging of a pole-mounted transformer serving the community, disrupting electricity supply. A local resident on patrol reportedly detected suspicious activity at the scene and raised alarm, leading to a chase that resulted in the arrest of the suspect while others fled.
Investigations suggest that the act may have been carried out by a group, with police currently pursuing additional suspects believed to be at large.
The incident has renewed concerns over increasing attacks on power infrastructure. Sariel A. Etwire, a senior official of ECG, commended the residents for their intervention, noting that such collaboration is crucial in curbing vandalism.
She warned that the destruction of electricity installations not only disrupts supply to communities but also imposes heavy financial burdens on the company and the state.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as efforts continue to safeguard critical infrastructure.
The case has been adjourned to April 28, 2026, as investigations proceed.
