Ghana’s Trade Gains Mask Underlying Risks Despite Record Export Surge

Ghana recorded a sharp rise in its trade surplus in the final quarter of 2025, but new data suggests the strong performance may be masking deeper structural vulnerabilities in the economy.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the country posted a trade surplus of GH₵47.2 billion in Q4 2025—nearly three times the GH₵17.5 billion recorded in the previous quarter—driven largely by soaring export values.

Total exports reached GH₵108.6 billion, significantly outpacing imports of GH₵61.4 billion, with global demand and favourable commodity prices playing a major role in boosting earnings.

However, the report indicates that the surge was driven more by rising prices than increased production volumes. When adjusted for price changes, Ghana actually recorded a real trade deficit, suggesting that underlying export strength may not be as robust as headline figures imply.

The country’s export profile also remains heavily concentrated, with gold dominating trade flows. Gold exports alone accounted for nearly 67 percent of total export value, far exceeding contributions from other key commodities such as cocoa and crude oil.

On the global stage, Asia continues to dominate as Ghana’s primary export destination, absorbing more than half of total shipments. Major markets include India and the United Arab Emirates, highlighting Ghana’s reliance on a limited number of trading partners.

Despite these concerns, Ghana is making gradual progress in expanding intra-African trade. Exports to countries such as South Africa have increased, supported by frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Economists, however, warn that the current export boom may not be sustainable unless Ghana diversifies its export base and invests in value addition. Heavy dependence on commodities leaves the country exposed to global price fluctuations, which could quickly reverse recent gains.

The findings underscore the need for long-term reforms to strengthen resilience and ensure that export growth translates into stable and inclusive economic progress.
