The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the robbery attack on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road that claimed the life of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation carried out at Atimatim near Kumasi by a joint team from the Police Intelligence Directorate, Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters and regional police commands.
According to the Police, the suspects, Mohammed Ahmed, also known as “I Can Do,” and Bawa Gideon, attempted to escape and opened fire on officers before they were apprehended.
Police retrieved a pistol, ammunition, pepper spray, mobile phones, desert boots and other items believed to have been used in criminal activities.
Investigators say Mohammed Ahmed admitted involvement in several robberies, including the attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, as well as other incidents in Nkawie and Fufuso.
Three additional suspects identified only as Dauda, Huefe and A.T. are currently being sought by the Police.
While Mohammed Ahmed is receiving treatment under Police guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Bawa Gideon remains in custody assisting with investigations.
The Police have appealed to the public to provide information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects as efforts continue to bring all those involved before the courts.
