The Ghana Football Association (GFA) could face heavy sanctions from FIFA after a pitch invasion disrupted Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025.
The incident, which occurred in the second half, led to a temporary halt of the game as security personnel struggled to remove 21-year-old Mohammed Huzeinu, who breached stadium security. The Ghana Police Service swiftly arrested him, and an Accra District Court sentenced him to 100 days in jail for his actions.
In a statement, the GFA reaffirmed its stance against pitch invasions, describing them as a serious breach of security that disrupts games and tarnishes Ghana’s reputation in international football.
“This sentencing serves as a strong warning to fans to respect stadium regulations and maintain order during matches. The FA has consistently urged supporters to uphold discipline and follow matchday protocols to prevent fines and sanctions,” the statement read.
FIFA, football’s world governing body, has strict regulations on stadium security and crowd control. Previous pitch invasion incidents have led to financial penalties, stadium bans, and even point deductions for national teams.
With Ghana already under scrutiny for fan behavior in previous matches, this latest breach could result in sanctions ranging from fines to a possible stadium ban, forcing Ghana to play future matches behind closed doors or at a neutral venue.
As the GFA awaits FIFA’s verdict, the incident has reignited discussions on the need for stricter security measures at Ghana’s stadiums to ensure fan safety and prevent further disruptions to international fixtures.
