Road maintenance contractors responsible for drain desilting, gutter clearing and roadside maintenance across the country have threatened to stage a protest at the Presidency over unpaid contracts dating back to 2020.
The contractors, operating under the Single Man Contractors (SMC) Association, say they are owed several years of arrears for certified works executed on behalf of the Ghana Highway Authority, despite repeated efforts to secure payment.
In a petition addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, the association appealed for urgent government intervention, warning that the prolonged delay in settling the debt has pushed many contractors into severe financial distress and jeopardised their operations.
According to the group, members completed their assigned responsibilities in line with contractual agreements and played a critical role in maintaining drainage systems and road infrastructure to help reduce flooding risks, particularly during the rainy season.
The contractors stated that the failure to honour the outstanding payments has affected their ability to meet financial obligations, sustain their businesses and undertake future maintenance works.
They warned that unless immediate action is taken to resolve the matter, members may embark on a peaceful picketing exercise at Jubilee House to draw national attention to their plight.
The association disclosed that it had earlier petitioned the Presidency in March this year but had yet to receive a satisfactory response, prompting renewed calls for intervention as concerns over flooding continue to grow across the country.
