Emergency responders have successfully rescued four people alive following the collapse of a one-storey building at Adenta Newsite in Accra during Wednesday evening’s heavy rains.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the operation, which lasted several hours, was launched after a distress call reported the collapse of the structure near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket.
Rescue teams from the GNFS National Headquarters, supported by personnel from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations, swiftly moved to the scene and began search and rescue operations.
According to the Service, five people, including two children, were trapped beneath the rubble when the building gave way. Through a coordinated effort, four victims — Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda — were pulled out alive with varying degrees of injuries.
The injured survivors were subsequently transported to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment and medical evaluation.
Rescue teams continued working through the debris in search of the remaining occupant, Margaret Kpeli. She was later retrieved from the collapsed structure in an unconscious state and handed over to the Adenta District Police for preservation and further investigations.
In addition to the human rescue efforts, emergency personnel also saved a dog trapped under the rubble.
The GNFS said the operation was officially concluded late Thursday after exhaustive search efforts confirmed that all occupants had been accounted for.
The Service commended residents who assisted in the initial stages of the rescue before emergency teams arrived and expressed appreciation to the Ghana Police Service, medical personnel, and other agencies whose collaboration contributed to the operation.
The building collapse occurred during torrential rains that affected several parts of the Greater Accra Region from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, raising renewed concerns about structural safety during extreme weather conditions.
