GPCC Urges Stronger Law Enforcement and Waste Control Measures to Tackle Rising Flood Disasters in Ghana

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of planning and building regulations as part of efforts to curb the persistent flooding that continues to affect communities across the country.

Speaking at the opening of the Council’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Wednesday, GPCC President Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye said many of the recent flood incidents were preventable and largely driven by human activities, including poor land use practices and weak adherence to existing laws.

He stressed that government action should go beyond post-disaster responses, urging authorities to ensure continuous enforcement of regulations governing construction on waterways and wetlands.

According to him, demolitions carried out after flooding events should not be treated as isolated reactions but as part of a sustained national strategy to prevent disasters before they occur.

Apostle Dr Nyamekye also called for increased investment in drainage infrastructure to match Ghana’s expanding urban population, warning that inadequate systems continue to worsen the impact of heavy rainfall.

He further identified poor waste disposal practices, particularly the dumping of plastics and solid waste into gutters, as a major contributor to blocked drains and intensified flooding in several communities.

Beyond infrastructure and enforcement, he appealed to churches and faith-based organisations to support victims of recent floods through humanitarian assistance, noting that many families have lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones.

Other speakers at the conference emphasised the role of the Christian community in promoting responsible citizenship and national development. Apostle Dr Nana Anyani-Boadum highlighted the importance of discipleship and values-based living in shaping society.

The Reverend Jehoiada Godwin Amuzu, speaking on behalf of the Christian Council of Ghana, said churches must continue to engage in advocacy and environmental stewardship as part of their broader social responsibility.

Rev Dr Joyce Rosalind Aryee also called for unity among Christian bodies, encouraging collaborative action on national challenges and commending the GPCC for its continued voice in public affairs.

The conference theme, “Reflecting Christ” (Matthew 5:16), underscored calls for faith-based organisations to translate religious teachings into practical actions that support national wellbeing and resilience.
