The government has secured scholarships for more than 30 health tutors to pursue doctoral studies as part of a broader strategy to strengthen specialist nursing education and improve the quality of healthcare delivery across the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during a joint matriculation ceremony for specialised nursing students held on Thursday, June 25.

According to the Minister, the scholarship programme is designed to enhance the capacity of health training institutions by equipping tutors with advanced academic and professional expertise needed to train the next generation of specialist nurses.

He explained that Ghana’s healthcare system requires a growing pool of highly skilled professionals to respond effectively to changing disease patterns, advances in medical technology and increasing demands for specialised healthcare services.

Akandoh noted that the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the health sector through investments in human resource development, training infrastructure and educational quality.

He said expanding the number of specialist nurses remains a key priority for government, not only to address workforce shortages within the country but also to support Ghana’s managed migration policy for health professionals.

The Minister further disclosed that the scholarships complement efforts to transition nursing education towards a competency-based curriculum, which is expected to improve practical skills acquisition and professional standards among trainees.

He stressed that achieving sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery will require continuous investment in training, equipment, infrastructure and institutional capacity.

The scholarship initiative is expected to increase the number of highly qualified educators in nursing institutions, thereby improving specialist training programmes and helping to bridge critical workforce gaps within the health sector.

Government officials believe the move will contribute significantly to the long-term development of Ghana’s healthcare system by producing a stronger pipeline of specialist nurses and healthcare educators.
