Suspected African Swine Fever Outbreak Hits Kwahu West Municipality, Authorities on High Alert

A suspected case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported in the Kwahu West Municipality in the Eastern Region, raising concerns among local pig farmers and authorities. Several deaths among pigs in the area were first reported two weeks ago, prompting farmers to alert the relevant authorities. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed that samples have been sent to the laboratory for analysis to determine if ASF is indeed the cause.

The disease, which is highly contagious and deadly among pigs, has already led to losses for local farmers. The situation is being carefully monitored, and officials are awaiting the results to determine the next course of action, which could involve strict quarantine measures and disinfection protocols to prevent further spread.

African Swine Fever is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated feed and water, or vectors such as ticks and flies. While it poses no direct threat to humans, it can be catastrophic for the swine industry, as it can decimate pig populations rapidly. In the case of infection, pigs may die within a week, and pregnant pigs may suffer miscarriages, with the offspring unable to survive.

The region has witnessed ASF outbreaks in the past, including a 2023 incident in the nearby Kwahu Akwaboa area, where pig farmers suffered millions of cedis in damages. Additionally, in 2021, the disease affected several pig farms in the Bono Region, where nearly 200 pigs were lost.

The Veterinary Services Department (VSD) has been proactive in addressing the issue. In the previous outbreaks, veterinary officers conducted extensive educational campaigns for farm owners, teaching them preventive measures to curb the disease’s spread. In addition to quarantine efforts, the VSD also prohibited the transportation of animals and animal products from the affected areas and mandated veterinary supervision before any pig was slaughtered to ensure its safety for human consumption.

The current suspected outbreak in the Kwahu West Municipality follows a similar pattern, and the authorities are focusing on preventing its escalation. Officials are urging farmers and the public to stay vigilant for signs of the disease, which include loss of appetite, vomiting, bloodstains around the ears, nose, and mouth, and unusual behavior in the affected pigs.

As the situation continues to develop, the authorities remain on high alert to mitigate the spread of the disease and protect Ghana’s swine industry from further economic damage.
