Antoine Semenyo has etched his name into Ghanaian football history after becoming the first player from the country to be named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
The Manchester City forward earned the prestigious recognition after an outstanding 2025/26 season that saw him emerge as one of the league’s most effective attacking players.
Semenyo’s selection caps a remarkable campaign that began with an impressive spell at Bournemouth before his January transfer to Manchester City.
He scored 10 Premier League goals for Bournemouth before making the high-profile switch to the Etihad Stadium in a deal reportedly worth around £62.5 million.
The Ghanaian continued his strong form after joining City, finishing the season with 17 Premier League goals and four assists across his two clubs.
His performances also earned him a nomination for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, although he did not win the individual prize.
Landmark achievement for Ghana
Semenyo’s inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year carries particular significance because the selection is determined by fellow professional footballers.
The recognition means the 26-year-old was voted among the outstanding performers in the Premier League by players who competed against him throughout the season.
He had earlier received recognition from supporters after winning the PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month award for September 2025.
Semenyo was also shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Season award alongside high-profile names including Bruno Fernandes, Declan Rice, Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago.
Speaking after the PFA recognition, Semenyo said he was honoured to receive the backing of his fellow professionals.
“You play against these players all year round. It’s nice to know that I’m one who’s been voted for,” he said.
He added that being selected alongside some of the league’s top players was a major honour.
Record-breaking Premier League campaign
Semenyo’s 17 league goals also made him the highest-scoring Ghanaian in a single Premier League season.
His tally surpassed the previous benchmark associated with Ghanaian stars such as Tony Yeboah and Andre Ayew.
The forward’s development has been rapid since joining Bournemouth from Bristol City in January 2023.
After scoring 11 Premier League goals during the 2024/25 campaign, he produced an even stronger season in 2025/26, attracting interest from several leading English clubs before Manchester City secured his signature.
At City, Semenyo adapted quickly to the demands of playing for one of England’s leading clubs and continued to contribute goals and attacking threat.
His historic PFA Team of the Year selection now adds another major milestone to a breakthrough campaign that has elevated his standing both in the Premier League and Ghanaian football.
