Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to rebuild the economic activities around La Pleasure Beach and support businesses affected by the recent demolition of the facility.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia described La Beach as a socially, economically and culturally significant enclave that has developed into one of Ghana’s major beach resorts.
According to him, the beach has provided livelihoods for thousands of people, particularly young people, while also serving as a venue for international events and entertainment activities.
He said La Beach played a role in activities associated with Ghana’s “Year of Return” and related programmes during the previous NPP administration, which he said helped promote Ghana internationally.
Dr Bawumia expressed concern about the demolition of the beach facility, particularly the destruction of movable assets which, he said, could have been removed by their owners.
“It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly,” he stated, describing the situation as “particularly painful and surprising.”
He said his objective would be to transform La Beach into a major tourism and economic enclave while preserving the livelihoods of businesses operating in the area.
As part of the proposed approach, Dr Bawumia outlined five measures.
First, he said a future administration under his leadership would seek to rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to individual businesses.
Second, he said the space would be redesigned to meet appropriate standards, with support provided to operators to enable them to run their businesses.
Third, he proposed securing space for the Labadi Beach Hotel and other establishments, while allowing smaller businesses to continue operating as part of the wider beach economy.
Fourth, he said his administration would engage the owners of LABOMA Beach to resolve outstanding issues and work with them to establish their businesses in compliance with the law.
Finally, he said attention would be given to the lagoon and environmental challenges, including flooding.
Dr Bawumia said the proposed measures were intended to protect and improve the employment opportunities generated by the beach economy.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he said.
The statement was issued from Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
