Government, Teacher Unions Near Resolution as Strike Talks Advance

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says negotiations between the government and striking teacher unions have reached an advanced stage, raising hopes of an early resolution to the ongoing industrial action.

She said the progress recorded in the discussions had strengthened government’s optimism that the impasse would soon be resolved and teachers could return fully to the classroom.

Speaking at the 2026 Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony in Accra, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the engagements with the unions had remained constructive.

“I’m, however, encouraged by the progress made so far. Talks between government and the unions are well advanced and I am hopeful that the constructive engagements we have seen will lead us to a resolution very soon,” she said.

The Vice President’s comments come as the strike continues to draw attention to the potential impact of industrial action on teaching and learning across the country.

She used the occasion to underscore the importance of teachers to Ghana’s education system, describing teaching as “one of our most important professions.”

According to her, the Ghana Teacher Prize remains an important platform for recognising teachers who demonstrate excellence and uphold high professional standards.

Beyond the immediate labour dispute, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said Ghana’s education system must also respond to rapid technological changes, particularly the growing influence of artificial intelligence.

She said education must remain adaptive to technological developments and indicated that government was committed to equipping teachers with the skills required to prepare students for the changing world of work.

“We must ensure that our teachers are equipped with the skills they need to prepare our students to adapt to technological changes, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence,” she said.

On secondary education reforms, the Vice President disclosed that 99 double-track schools had so far fully transitioned to the single-track system.

She said the development represented progress towards the government’s objective of completely phasing out the double-track arrangement.

The government, she added, remained committed to improving conditions within the education sector while ensuring that teachers and students were adequately prepared for emerging challenges.
