Viktor Gyökeres delivered a match-winning performance, scoring once and providing an assist as Arsenal defeated Slavia Prague 2-1 to preserve their unbeaten record in the UEFA Champions League league phase.
The Swedish striker was instrumental in Arsenal’s victory on Wednesday night, stepping up in the absence of Kai Havertz as manager Mikel Arteta made six changes to the team that beat Liverpool in the Premier League.
Gyökeres opened his account as a creator in the ninth minute, producing an excellent pass behind the Slavia Prague defence for Noni Madueke, who finished confidently to give the visitors an early lead.
He then turned provider into goalscorer before the interval, linking up with Mikel Merino before producing a superb curling finish that struck the post on its way into the net.
Arsenal appeared comfortable with their two-goal advantage, but Slavia Prague mounted a determined response after the restart.
The hosts threatened through Oskar Kubiak, whose effort from the edge of the penalty area was saved by David Raya. Gabriel Magalhães also made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Mojmír Chytil following a corner.
Slavia Prague eventually pulled one back in the 90th minute through Wiktor Nowak, setting up a tense finish, but Arsenal held firm to claim their fourth consecutive unbeaten result in the competition.
The victory keeps Arsenal third in the league-phase standings, behind Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, as they continue their pursuit of another impressive European campaign.
Having completed last season’s league phase with a perfect record, Arteta’s men have once again demonstrated their credentials as serious contenders for continental honours.
