Veteran Nollywood star Joke Silva has revealed that it was her husband, acting legend Olu Jacobs, who encouraged her to retain her maiden name—an early lesson in personal branding that has defined her enduring career.
Speaking on the Leadership podcast with Stephen Akintayo, Silva explained that Jacobs recognized the value of the “Joke Silva” name long before most actors thought in terms of brand equity.
“He was the one who actually advised that I don’t [change my name]. Because he understood the importance of branding,” she said. “My brand had started building as Joke Silva, and changing brands several years after one has been using that brand, as far as he was concerned, could cause problems for me.”
Despite keeping her professional identity intact, Silva says there was never any ambiguity about her personal life. Within family and industry circles, she was—and remains—Mrs. Jacobs in private, while her stage name continues to shine on screen and in credits.
Their partnership, now spanning decades, is celebrated as a model of mutual support: Jacobs’ mentorship on career strategy matched Silva’s own talent and work ethic, helping her navigate Nollywood’s evolution from its early days to its current global prominence.
By choosing to highlight her husband’s strategic foresight, Silva underscores a broader shift in the entertainment industry—where personal branding, professional identity, and personal relationships can co-exist harmoniously, empowering both partners to thrive.
