Court Remands Ex-NSB Boss Over Witness Tampering Allegations as Trial Tensions Mount

A High Court in Accra has ordered the remand of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahen, into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for one week, following allegations that he attempted to interfere with a key witness in a high-profile theft case.

The move came at the request of Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, who told the court that intelligence suggested Adu-Boahen had tried to obstruct justice by engaging a prosecution witness outside legal channels.

Defence lawyer and former legislator, Samuel Atta Akyea, challenged the claim, describing the intelligence as vague and unsubstantiated. “My client has no incentive or capacity to influence the outcome of this trial,” he argued, calling the remand request excessive.

In a careful response to the competing arguments, the presiding judge opted to examine the intelligence behind closed doors. After reviewing the classified evidence, the court ruled in favour of the prosecution, stating that the remand was necessary to preserve the credibility of the trial process while the prosecution finalises its witness statements.

The court emphasized that the decision was a protective measure, not a presumption of guilt, and aimed to maintain the integrity of the judicial proceedings.

In contrast, Adu-Boahen’s co-accused—his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, and former bank officer Mildred Donkor—were granted bail, with the court finding no immediate risk of interference or flight.

Adding a new twist to the legal drama, the Attorney-General disclosed that Adu-Boahen is also the subject of a separate probe involving financial irregularities at Ghana Water Limited. Though details remain scant, it suggests that more legal troubles could be on the horizon for the former intelligence chief.

Adu-Boahen is due back in court on May 9, 2025, as the prosecution prepares to advance its case.
