The newly elected leadership of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, as part of their commitment to strengthening ties with key stakeholders and advancing the country’s sports agenda.
The GOC delegation, led by its newly elected President, Richard Kofi Akpokavie, included a diverse group of executives who sought the minister’s blessing and guidance as they begin their tenure.
During the meeting, Mr. Adams congratulated the executives on their successful elective congress, praising the committee for maintaining its credibility and welcoming the inclusion of the Commonwealth Games Association under their mandate. He emphasized that sports should not be left solely to the government, describing it as a significant business sector with the potential to drive economic growth and national pride.
“I am excited to see a successful and peaceful election within the GOC. This shows the level of maturity and dedication in the sports fraternity,” Mr. Adams said. “Sports is a big business, and it is crucial that we work together to develop it further.”
The minister also called for greater female representation within the GOC, encouraging women to actively seek leadership roles in the committee. “We need more women in decision-making positions in sports. Do not shy away from taking the lead,” he added.
In response, GOC President Akpokavie expressed gratitude for the minister’s support and pledged the committee’s commitment to enhancing Ghana’s sporting image.
“We are here to assure you of our full support as we work together to promote sports in Ghana. We recognize the important role the ministry plays, and we look forward to a strong partnership,” Akpokavie noted.
The meeting was attended by key figures within the GOC, including Alhaji Kamal Sulley, Nana Mankata II, Edwin Amankwah, Rafatu Inusah, Samuel Ayeh, Nii Lante Bannerman, Mawuko Afadzinu, Delphina Quaye, Mohammed Muniru Kassim, Yeboah Evans, George Lamptey, and Ernest Danso, among others.
As the new leadership settles into their roles, the GOC is expected to focus on building strong institutional partnerships, promoting gender equity, and enhancing the country’s performance at international sporting events.
