National Security Raids Home of Former GIHOC MD as State Intensifies Asset Recovery Drive

In a move aimed at recovering state assets, national security operatives reportedly stormed the residence of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, at dawn on Thursday, May 15, 2025. The operation, conducted around 5:00 a.m., sought to retrieve state vehicles allegedly in his possession, as part of a broader crackdown on financial impropriety involving former government appointees.

While Mr. Jumah, a former official under the administration of ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was not present at his residence during the operation, the effort reflects the government’s ongoing campaign to reclaim state resources and curb corruption.

Investigators are reportedly examining Mr. Jumah’s acquisition of a luxury Genesis G90 saloon car (registration number GE 86 22-19), which he purchased at a deeply discounted price of just GHS 4,943.11—approximately 5% of its assessed market value—under questionable terms. The car, originally valued at over $100,000, was sold to him under his Conditions of Service as Managing Director, according to a letter signed by GIHOC’s Secretary and Head of Administration, Apea Twumasi-Ankrah, dated August 1, 2019.

An independent valuation by the State Transport Corporation later placed the vehicle’s market value at GHS 98,862.00, based on an assessment of the car’s key components, which were deemed to be in “good” condition. The inspection, carried out by certified appraiser Daniel K. Orhin, noted the car had 38,971 km on the odometer and no major mechanical issues.

In addition to the Genesis G90, Mr. Jumah is also under investigation for allegedly retaining two additional vehicles, including an Audi valued at over $60,000, without formal approval from the GIHOC Board. One of these vehicles was reportedly used by his son before being returned, while the second has been successfully recovered and returned to Accra.

Further allegations against Mr. Jumah include claims that he inflated the staff numbers at GIHOC, placing unnecessary financial strain on the company. He is also accused of unauthorized sales of company properties in Tema valued at over $700,000, further deepening the company’s financial woes.

The case forms part of a broader crackdown on financial misconduct and asset recovery, as the government seeks to reclaim misappropriated state resources and strengthen public accountability.

Investigations are ongoing, with national security agencies and financial auditors expected to present their findings in the coming weeks.
