Ghana Launches Specialized Blue Water Guards to Protect Rivers from Illegal Mining in Western Region

In a bold move to curb the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, the Minerals Commission, under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has deployed a newly trained team of Blue Water Guards to monitor and protect river bodies in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality. This specialized unit, composed of ten personnel trained by the Ghana Navy, is tasked with patrolling riverbanks and reporting illegal mining activities threatening vital water resources.

The initiative, currently active in the Wassa Japa enclave, is part of a broader strategy to tackle illegal mining—locally known as “galamsey”—that has severely impacted water bodies and ecosystems across the Western Region. Plans are underway to expand the deployment of the Water Guards to other mining hotspots, including Prestea, Huni-Valley, and Simpa.

Steven Agbo, Social Scientist at the Minerals Commission, emphasized during a community forum that the Blue Water Guards’ mission is protective rather than confrontational. “Their role is to safeguard water bodies and the environment, not to harm anyone,” he stated, while warning that obstructing their work would attract strict legal consequences.

The operation is designed to foster collaboration between the Water Guards and security agencies such as the military, police, and national security services, as well as local government bodies, to ensure effective enforcement against illegal mining along rivers.

Community and traditional leaders, including MP Nicholas Amankwah and Municipal Chief Executive Raymond Nana Ebbah, expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations. Nana Kwabena Asare II, speaking on behalf of the Chief of Wassa Japa, pledged local commitment to protecting both the lands and waterways.

Addressing concerns from small-scale miners during the forum, the Minerals Commission team and government officials promised to work on resolving operational challenges while ensuring sustainable mining practices.

This deployment marks a significant step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to protect its water bodies and promote responsible mining, with hopes that the Blue Water Guards will play a critical role in restoring ecological balance and securing the livelihoods dependent on these vital natural resources.
