AfCFTA Equips Southern African SMEs to Compete Across One African Market

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has launched the Southern Africa Regional Cohort of its SME Booster Initiative in Gaborone, Botswana, as part of efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of African businesses and accelerate their participation in intra-African trade.

The programme brings together Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), Business Support Organisations (BSOs), government institutions and development partners to equip businesses with the practical knowledge, partnerships and market intelligence required to take advantage of opportunities within Africa’s emerging single market.

The Southern Africa Regional Cohort forms part of the AfCFTA Secretariat’s broader strategy to translate the opportunities created by the AfCFTA Agreement into tangible commercial outcomes for businesses across the continent.

During the opening of the programme, participants examined the current state of implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional implementation strategy, as well as findings from the Southern Africa SME and Business Support Organisation Survey.

These discussions are providing the foundation for a series of practical sessions designed to help participating businesses better understand continental markets, strengthen their competitiveness and position themselves for sustainable growth.

Throughout the programme, participating SMEs will receive practical support in areas including market intelligence, strategic business positioning, product value addition, standards compliance, packaging, branding and export readiness.

The objective is to develop a stronger pipeline of competitive and export-ready African enterprises capable of leveraging opportunities presented by the AfCFTA and participating effectively in continental and global value chains.

Addressing participants during the opening ceremony, Ms. Cynthia E. Gnassingbé-Essonam, Director of Private Sector Engagement and Communications at the AfCFTA Secretariat, stressed that building sustainable African businesses requires more than providing technical training.

“Training alone is not enough. Businesses need continued access to buyers, market intelligence, finance, logistics providers and commercial partners if they are to succeed beyond the workshop room,” she said.

According to Ms. Gnassingbé-Essonam, the SME Booster Initiative has therefore been structured not only to strengthen the technical capacity of participating enterprises, but also to establish commercial relationships capable of supporting their expansion beyond national borders.

The initiative connects SMEs with buyers, investors, logistics providers, financial institutions and Business Support Organisations across Africa, creating networks through which participating businesses can access markets and other services required to trade successfully.

“The ambition is to build a pipeline of export-ready African businesses and stronger Business Support Organisations that can drive trade across the continent,” she noted.

She added that the ultimate measure of successful AfCFTA implementation would be seen in businesses trading across borders, new partnerships being established and actual commercial transactions taking place.

Building West Africa’s Experience

The Gaborone edition builds on the successful implementation of previous AfCFTA SME Booster cohorts in West Africa and represents another step in the Secretariat’s efforts to extend practical business support to enterprises across the different regions of the continent.

By taking the programme to Southern Africa, the Secretariat is seeking to ensure that businesses in the region are better prepared to participate meaningfully in the integrated continental market being established under the AfCFTA.

The initiative recognises that while the AfCFTA creates an expanded market for African businesses, enterprises must possess the appropriate knowledge, products, standards, commercial networks and export capabilities to convert market access opportunities into actual trade.

Consequently, the SME Booster Initiative combines capacity development with market access and commercial connectivity, helping enterprises understand where opportunities exist and what they need to do to successfully enter new African markets.

Attention is being given to product value addition, standards compliance, packaging and branding, areas that can significantly influence the ability of SMEs to compete beyond their domestic markets.

The programme also places Business Support Organisations at the centre of the process, recognising their important role in providing sustained assistance to enterprises after individual training programmes have ended.

Turning the AfCFTA into Commercial Opportunities

Through the SME Booster Initiative, the AfCFTA Secretariat is seeking to strengthen the competitiveness of African enterprises by providing practical business support, facilitating market access, fostering regional partnerships and assisting SMEs to meet the standards required to participate in continental and global value chains.
