The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is taking decisive steps to protect its electoral integrity, announcing that the Ashanti Regional Chairperson race will be rerun on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, after procedural flaws marred the original vote.
The Association’s Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) nullified the June 30 poll following a review of petitions and stakeholder submissions that highlighted significant irregularities. The committee ruled that a fresh election was the only way to restore fairness, transparency, and adherence to GJA’s electoral guidelines.
“This rerun is about more than choosing a leader; it is about reaffirming our commitment to democratic values within the Association,” the GJA Elections Committee said in a statement.
In a bid to enhance trust, a composite voters’ register will be published this week on the Association’s official website and the Ashanti Regional platform. Candidates will also be given full access to the register ahead of the polls.
Key arrangements for the rerun:
-
Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2025
-
Time: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
-
Venue: Electoral Commission Regional Office, Kumasi
-
Identification: Valid Ghana Card or passport required
-
Supervision: Electoral Commission officials with GJA regional coordination
Ballots will be counted immediately after voting closes, with results expected to be announced on-site the same day.
The Elections Committee has appealed to members to participate actively and conduct themselves with the highest professional standards, noting that the credibility of the GJA depends on the example it sets for Ghana’s democratic culture.
