The Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH) has been shut down indefinitely following a violent overnight disturbance that left key facilities on campus damaged.
The unrest, which broke out late Thursday, August 14, and stretched into the early hours of Friday, saw parts of the school set ablaze, including the library and the senior housemaster’s office.
Although the immediate trigger of the riot remains unclear, education authorities say the closure was necessary to protect lives and property while investigations proceed.
“No casualties have been recorded, but the safety of students and staff remains our priority,” an official said, adding that the Ghana Police Service is working with school management to determine the root cause of the violence.
Assessment teams are yet to establish the full scale of destruction, but initial inspections confirm significant losses to the affected facilities.
The indefinite closure has forced students to vacate campus, with the Ministry of Education assuring that steps will be taken to restore calm and prevent a recurrence.
