Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has strongly condemned the police for allegedly shooting some youths in Bawku amidst growing unrest in the area. His remarks, issued on Wednesday, April 9, come in the wake of escalating tensions following the reported incident.
In his statement, Ayariga vehemently denied any involvement in the controversy, specifically refuting claims that he had directed police officers to allow residents to access the local market or buy goods. He made it clear that such decisions were beyond his scope of authority.
“I totally condemn the actions of the police in shooting youths today in Bawku,” Ayariga stated. “I have never had any discussion with police officers regarding allowing anyone to attend the market or purchase goods. These are decisions solely made by law enforcement agencies, and I have no operational control over them.”
The MP went on to call for greater cooperation between the security forces and traditional leaders, urging law enforcement to collaborate with Abugrago Azoka II, the Zugran and overlord of Kusaug, to restore peace and order in the troubled area.
“This is a time for unity and cooperation to bring calm to Bawku. The police must work with traditional authorities to ensure peace is restored,” Ayariga emphasized.
