Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped in to offer support and reassurance following a disturbing act of political violence that left a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.
On Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia visited Herbert, the student victim recovering at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where he offered words of comfort to the victim and his family, and presented a GH¢50,000 donation to cover medical expenses.
The attack occurred during a “Thank You” tour event in Bantama, Kumasi, organized by supporters of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, as part of post-NPP primary activities. The gathering descended into chaos after money distributed by a wealthy Agyapong ally allegedly sparked a violent confrontation.
Eyewitnesses say gun-wielding men believed to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party stormed the venue and attempted to seize the cash meant for performers, leading to a deadly brawl that ended with Herbert—contracted as part of the Jama group from Unity Hall (Conti)—being stabbed multiple times.
The Vice President’s visit comes amid rising public concern over political tensions turning violent, particularly among youth groups often mobilized for rallies and campaign events.
Observers see Dr. Bawumia’s visit as a significant gesture aimed at calming nerves, signaling zero tolerance for political thuggery, and reaffirming state responsibility in protecting lives during party activities.
Herbert’s family and hospital staff expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s timely intervention and financial support.
