In a transformative move that highlights the power of corporate intervention in community development, Ballagonnor, a deprived community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, has finally seen its longstanding electricity woes eased—thanks to the installation of solar-powered Power Up Units by Betway Ghana.
The initiative, which comes under Betway Ghana’s flagship Power Up programme, forms part of the company’s wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework dubbed Betway Cares. It aims to tackle energy poverty and improve digital inclusion in underserved communities.
The intervention follows a Channel One TV report, which brought national attention to the severe power challenges confronting residents. In response, Betway Ghana stepped in with purpose-built solar infrastructure equipped with mobile charging ports and lighting systems—delivering not just light, but hope to hundreds of families.
“Power and connectivity should not be luxuries,” said Mr. Kwabena Oppong-Nkrumah, Country Marketing Manager for Betway Ghana. “Through Power Up, we are proving that meaningful, lasting change is possible when businesses choose to lead with purpose.”
According to him, the initiative is more than charity—it is a long-term solution designed to foster sustainable energy inclusion while empowering communities to thrive in a connected, digitally driven world.
The impact is already being felt. Students in the area, who once had to travel to nearby towns to charge lamps or access electricity to study, can now do so within their own community. Mr. Isaac Awuku Yibor, the local Member of Parliament, described the move as a “lifeline for education and community safety.”
“We’re grateful to Betway for heeding the call. This not only enhances learning opportunities for children but also boosts security and productivity at night,” the MP said, while appealing to other corporate organisations to emulate Betway’s lead. He noted that over 100 communities in the region still lack electricity, making solar interventions crucial.
Betway Brand Ambassador and football legend Stephen Appiah, who was present at the commissioning event, said he was particularly moved by the impact the project would have on the youth. “This is the kind of impact that leaves a lasting legacy. Power means opportunity.”
The commissioning event drew a wide cross-section of stakeholders, including traditional authorities, district officials, community members, and media representatives, underscoring the broad significance of the gesture.
As Ghana continues to grapple with energy inequalities, Betway’s Power Up initiative offers a compelling model for public-private collaboration in tackling infrastructure deficits and championing inclusive growth—one solar unit at a time.
