The town of Bibiani is positioning itself as a new festive destination as authorities roll out a week-long programme to mark Ghana’s 69th Independence Day under the theme, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”
The initiative, spearheaded by Bright Asamoah Brefo, Member of Parliament for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, and Sebastian Obeng, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), aims to transform the annual celebration from a single-day event into a broader platform for tourism, culture, and economic activity.
Launching the activities, Mr Brefo stressed the need to rebrand Independence Day festivities to stimulate local development. He said the expanded format would not only promote patriotism but also create opportunities for businesses and showcase Bibiani’s potential to visitors.
The MP expressed his ambition to elevate the Bibiani celebration to rival the popular Kwahu Easter festivities, positioning the municipality as a vibrant hub during national celebrations.
“This week-long celebration will turn Bibiani into a lively centre of culture and entertainment, boosting local pride and opening up the area to tourists,” he stated.
Mr Obeng, on his part, assured residents and visitors of comprehensive security arrangements before, during, and after the events. He emphasised that Bibiani remains a peaceful and welcoming town, dismissing perceptions that parts of the Sefwi enclave are unsafe.
“Our brothers and sisters should not think that Sefwi is a no-go area. Bibiani is peaceful and welcoming. Everyone is free to join us in celebrating,” he said.
He also used the occasion to caution young people against drug abuse and other harmful behaviours during the festivities, urging them to celebrate responsibly.
Activities lined up for the celebration include a Cultural Heritage Day, Old School Night Dance, clean-up exercise, youth empowerment and institutional gala, Waakye Party, boxing night, Independence Day parade and carnival, and a mega concert.
Organisers say the diversified programme is designed to blend culture, entertainment, and community engagement while driving economic growth in the municipality.
