The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is transitioning towards a more proactive monetary policy approach anchored on expanded open market operations and longer-term financial instruments.
Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama revealed the move during the 124th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meeting held in Accra, highlighting the need for tools that better reflect the complexities of today’s macroeconomic environment. The proposed framework is expected to strengthen the central bank’s ability to manage liquidity, deepen credit access for the private sector, and reinforce the effectiveness of policy transmission across financial markets.
Dr. Asiama underscored the importance of ensuring that the current monetary stance supports disinflation efforts without stifling economic recovery. He pointed to critical uncertainties — such as exchange rate sustainability and investor confidence — that could shape medium-term inflation trajectories.
Calling for greater transparency, he emphasized that the post-MPC communiqué must serve as a reliable guide for market expectations, outlining the rationale behind policy decisions. This, he said, is key to maintaining public trust and institutional credibility.
The Governor also charged MPC members to uphold independence and analytical discipline in their deliberations, stressing that the Committee’s legitimacy rests on its capacity to adapt swiftly and thoughtfully to shifting economic dynamics.
