The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, is scheduled to appear before Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, to provide clarity on the financing and cost of the central bank’s new headquarters.
His appearance follows a long-standing request from National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs, who have demanded a detailed breakdown of the project’s funding, scope, cost variations, and completion timeline since August 2023.
Addressing Parliament, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga emphasized the need for transparency regarding the controversial project, stating that the central bank’s leadership must justify its decision to construct the new headquarters.
“At the committee meeting, we agreed that next Wednesday, we will invite the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to brief this House on the pricing of the new headquarters. We need to understand the cost variations, quantity assessments, and overall necessity of the project,” Mr. Ayariga said.
The development comes months after former President Nana Akufo-Addo inaugurated the Bank Square, a modern headquarters for the central bank, on November 20, 2024. However, concerns over project costs and financial accountability have sparked parliamentary scrutiny.
Dr. Asiama’s engagement with lawmakers is expected to provide answers on the project’s financial implications and the rationale behind the expenditure, amid broader discussions on Ghana’s economic priorities.
