Banks and other stakeholders have until November 30, 2026, to comment on a proposed Bank of Ghana (BoG) directive requiring lenders to hold enough liquid assets to cover cash needs during 30 days of severe financial stress.
The proposed Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) is intended to help banks meet short-term obligations during funding pressure and strengthen their resilience to sudden cash outflows. The BoG has opened the draft directive for public consultation before finalising it.
Comments should be emailed to [email protected]. The central bank says it will consider material submissions and explain in writing how they were addressed, including whether they were reflected in the final directive.
The proposal forms part of broader efforts to strengthen banking-sector risk management. The BoG has also outlined a Credit Risk Management Directive covering the lending process, from loan origination and monitoring to measurement and recovery.
The eventual effect of the LCR rules on banks’ treasury operations and liquidity planning will depend on the requirements adopted in the final directive.
