The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in partnership with youth-led volunteer group Bus Stop Boyz, spearheaded a major clean-up operation at Accra’s historic Nationalism Park.
Led by Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Santana Aggrey, Deputy CEO of the GTA, alongside Mr. Jones Aruna Nelson, Director of Corporate Affairs, and Nana Agyenim Boateng, Director of Administration, the exercise mobilized dozens of volunteers to rejuvenate the park’s environment.
The initiative, which reflects the growing call for sustainable tourism practices, also highlighted GTA’s commitment to President John Dramani Mahama’s “Reset Agenda,” aimed at protecting and enhancing Ghana’s cultural heritage sites.
Speaking after the exercise, Mr. Aggrey stressed the importance of partnerships across public and private sectors to maintain tourism landmarks:
“Tourism is not just about travel; it’s about protecting our shared spaces. We call on all MMDAs and stakeholders to treat our historic sites with the care and pride they deserve.”
The Bus Stop Boyz were highly praised for their patriotic efforts, embodying the spirit of youth activism and environmental stewardship.
Established under Act 817 and strengthened by L.I. 2393, the GTA is legally mandated to promote and regulate Ghana’s tourism sector, despite ownership of many sites resting with other agencies like the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and the Forestry Commission.
The clean-up formed part of a larger drive by GTA to ensure that Ghana’s tourist attractions remain clean, safe, and internationally competitive, positioning the country as a prime destination for eco-conscious travelers.
Mr. Aggrey concluded by emphasizing,
“Safeguarding our heritage is a collective duty. Together, we can build a tourism sector that benefits generations.”
