Ghana’s music fraternity and devoted fans are preparing for an emotional tribute as the Creative Arts Agency, in collaboration with the family of the late music icon Daddy Lumba, has scheduled a candlelight vigil to celebrate the life and impact of the legendary highlife musician.
The vigil, set for Saturday, August 2nd at 6:00 p.m. at Independence Square, is expected to draw thousands in a solemn yet spirited farewell to the man born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, whose songs shaped generations and defined Ghanaian popular music.
This gathering of music lovers, industry players, and sympathisers will mark a key moment in a week of national mourning and reflection following the announcement of Daddy Lumba’s passing after a brief illness.
Public Outpouring Spurs Memorial Plans
The decision to host the candlelight vigil comes in response to an overwhelming outpouring of public grief and support, which the Fosu family acknowledged in a statement released on July 27, 2025.
“The Fosu family… wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation to all well-wishers, friends, colleagues, fans, and the general public for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support,” the family noted.
A Book of Condolence Opens to the Public
In addition to the vigil, a book of condolence has been opened at Daddy Lumba’s residence on Kinshasha Crescent, House Number 12 (GA-332-9264). Mourners are welcome to visit daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., starting Tuesday, July 29.
The family is inviting fans and supporters to honour Lumba’s memory while urging the public to also respect their need for space during this difficult time.
“We kindly ask the public to continue to respect the privacy of the family… while joining us to celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of our beloved Daddy Lumba,” the statement concluded.
Legacy Beyond Music
Known for timeless hits like Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, and Yentie Obiaa, Daddy Lumba was more than a musician—he was a cultural icon whose influence transcended the highlife genre. His lyrical genius, signature style, and contributions to Ghana’s music industry earned him a place among the greatest African entertainers of all time.
As Independence Square prepares to glow with candlelight in his honour, many are reminded that while Daddy Lumba may be gone, his music and legacy will continue to illuminate hearts across generations.
