China has thrown its full support behind Ghana’s 24-hour Economy and Green Transition initiatives, pledging an additional grant of 200 million Renminbi (RMB) to advance the country’s development agenda.
The grant, confirmed after bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, brings China’s total assistance to Ghana to 400 million RMB. The new funds will support key infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Aflao Market and the renovation of the National Theatre in Accra.
Chinese President Xi expressed Beijing’s readiness to collaborate with Ghana in promoting sustainable growth and job creation through the two flagship policies — the 24-hour Economy and the Green Transition — which form the cornerstone of President Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Agenda.
“China is excited about Ghana’s 24-hour economy initiative and Green Transition policy and is positioning itself to partner with the government and our business sector,” President Mahama disclosed after the meeting.
The talks also advanced discussions on the proposed Zero Tariff Policy between Ghana and China, expected to be finalised by the end of October. The policy aims to enhance bilateral trade and expand market access for Ghanaian exports.
In addition, both leaders explored new frameworks for cooperation in responsible small-scale mining, with a focus on regulation, technology transfer, and investment in sustainable mining practices.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s adherence to the One China Policy and commended China’s leadership in promoting global governance reform for a fairer, more inclusive international system.
He further described the Aflao Market project — one of the major beneficiaries of the grant — as a strategic trade hub that will boost cross-border commerce between Ghana and Togo, and drive growth in the Volta Region.
“The Aflao Market will be an important trading platform linking Ghana and Togo, and key to our Resetting Ghana Agenda,” he noted.
The renewed cooperation signals a deepening partnership between Ghana and China, anchored on shared priorities of industrialisation, sustainability, and economic resilience.
