The Christian Council of Ghana has elected Enoch Nii Narh Thompson as its new chairman in a leadership transition aimed at strengthening the Council’s influence ahead of Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary and the organisation’s centenary celebrations in 2029.
Rev. Thompson’s election at the Council’s 2026 Annual General Meeting in Accra signals what the Christian body describes as a deliberate push for continuity, experienced leadership and stronger institutional direction at a time of growing national and social challenges.
The newly elected chairman succeeds Bliss Divine Agbeko, who served as chairman from May 2025 to May 2026 after previously holding the vice-chairmanship position.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Cyril Fayose, the Council said Rev. Thompson’s elevation was influenced by his extensive leadership experience within the Ghana Baptist Convention and his longstanding involvement in the Council’s executive structures.
The Council stressed that his academic background, pastoral experience and international exposure position him to lead the ecumenical body through a critical period of institutional expansion and national engagement.
According to the statement, the transition is not merely ceremonial but part of a broader strategy to reinforce the Council’s advocacy role, deepen theological engagement and strengthen unity among member churches.
The Council also indicated that the new leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping the organisation’s direction as it prepares for major national and ecclesiastical milestones over the coming years.
Rev. Thompson has previously served in several senior leadership roles within the Ghana Baptist Convention, including Vice-President (Ministries) and Executive President, while also undertaking pastoral and academic assignments in both Ghana and Canada.
The Christian Council expressed confidence that his leadership would help consolidate the organisation’s voice on national issues while promoting Christian unity and institutional growth.
“It is our fervent prayer that the good Lord will equip Rev. Thompson to provide the needed leadership and commitment for a prosperous future,” the statement said.
