The Dagbon Traditional Council has fixed Thursday, July 16, 2026, for the third-day Islamic prayers in honour of the late Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II.
The prayers will be held at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi at 10:00 a.m. as part of the traditional Islamic observances following the King’s passing. The Council has invited residents, well-wishers and the general public to attend and offer prayers for the peaceful repose of the late monarch.
The announcement comes days after Yaa-Naa Abukari II was laid to rest in the early hours of Monday, July 13, within the Gbewaa Palace in accordance with Islamic rites and the customs of the Dagbon Kingdom.
In its announcement, the Dagbon Traditional Council paid tribute to the late Yaa-Naa, describing him as a respected traditional ruler whose leadership strengthened peace, unity and development across Dagbon.
The Council appealed to the people of Dagbon to preserve the peace that characterised the late King’s reign and to refrain from actions that could disrupt harmony during the mourning period.
It also encouraged Ghanaians and friends of the Dagbon Kingdom to join in prayers and reflection as the kingdom mourns one of its most revered traditional leaders.
The Council indicated that details of the final funeral rites for Yaa-Naa Abukari II will be communicated at a later date in accordance with Dagbon customs and royal protocol.
Yaa-Naa Abukari II, who served as President of both the Dagbon Traditional Council and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026. His death marked the end of a reign widely recognised for fostering reconciliation and stability within the kingdom.
