Traders in the Dormaa Municipality are appealing to the government for urgent intervention following the destruction of thousands of crates of eggs worth over GHC10 million exported to Burkina Faso.
The appeal was made to President John Dramani Mahama during his two-day “Reset Ghana Tour” of the Bono Region. Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, who spoke on behalf of the traders, said the eggs were exported through Paga in the Upper East Region but were seized and destroyed by officials in Burkina Faso for reasons unknown to the traders.
The incident has significantly disrupted the local poultry industry, which serves as a major source of livelihood in Dormaa-Ahenkro. The Paramount Chief emphasised that the poultry sector is central to the socio-economic wellbeing of his people, many of whom rely on cross-border trade for their survival.
“Dormaa-Ahenkro is a hub of poultry business. My people have been trading with the Burkinabes for years, and we are yet to know why they seized and destroyed the eggs. We urge the government to investigate this matter and ensure justice for our traders,” Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Badu stated.
President Mahama’s visit to Dormaa-Ahenkro also included the groundbreaking ceremony for a 24-hour model market at the Dormaa Tuesday Market, aimed at boosting trade infrastructure in the municipality.
Traders hope that government intervention will clarify the circumstances surrounding the destruction of the egg shipment, prevent future losses, and safeguard cross-border trade, which is vital to the region’s economy.
