In a strategic move to strengthen Ghana’s data and policy landscape, President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as the Acting Government Statistician.
The decision, announced in an official statement from the Presidency on Friday, awaits further consultations with the Council of State.
Dr. Iddrisu, a seasoned economist and prominent figure in Ghana’s public sector, is set to bring a results-oriented leadership approach to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
Known for his analytical depth and policy expertise, he currently heads the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance, where he has played a central role in shaping national macroeconomic strategies.
His appointment reflects the government’s push for evidence-based governance, with Dr. Iddrisu expected to spearhead the modernization of statistical systems and enhance the accuracy and accessibility of national data.
At the Ministry of Finance, he has led economic forecasting efforts, coordinated real and external sector analyses, and contributed to key macroeconomic decisions.
With over a decade of experience in high-ranking government roles, Dr. Iddrisu’s professional journey includes leading the Economic Research and Forecasting Division (2013–2019) and serving as Acting Director of the Real Sector Division (2010–2013).
His expertise extends beyond national borders, having consulted for major international bodies such as the World Bank and Oxfam GB.
In academia, he contributes as a part-time lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), underscoring his commitment to knowledge-sharing.
His academic credentials include a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Japan, an MPA in Public and Economic Policy from the London School of Economics, an MPhil in Economics, and a BA in Economics with French from the University of Ghana.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Minister for Government Communications, Dr. Iddrisu’s appointment is a step toward “reinforcing Ghana’s statistical capacity and ensuring robust, data-informed development planning.”
If confirmed, Dr. Iddrisu will oversee the GSS at a time when reliable data is more critical than ever in shaping economic recovery and long-term development strategies.
