An Accra driver, John Takyi, has been granted bail of GHC70,000.00 with two sureties by the Kaneshie District Court One, following his involvement in a road accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian.
Takyi faces charges of careless and inconsiderate driving, as well as negligently causing harm, but his plea was not taken as the case docket has been forwarded to the Attorney General for further advice.
The court has directed the 42-year-old driver to reappear on June 25, 2025, as the legal process continues.
According to the facts presented by Police Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, the incident occurred on May 10, 2025, at approximately 7:30 p.m., when Takyi, behind the wheel of a Kia Sorento with registration number GR 2926-21, struck 50-year-old pedestrian Kojo Andoh along the Dr. K.A. Busia highway at the Odorkor Water Works section.
Takyi, who reported the incident to the police shortly after, claimed he was driving from Odorkor towards Mallam when the unfortunate collision occurred.
Andoh was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for emergency medical attention, but was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
The deceased’s body has since been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as investigations into the incident continue.
The court’s decision to grant bail comes as family members and residents call for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
