Ghana’s Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has stepped in to address the growing power supply crisis following the shutdown of Bridge Power Co. Limited. The power company ceased operations on Tuesday, March 4, due to the government’s failure to settle supply arrears amounting to $47 million for seven months of service.
The shutdown has led to a significant reduction of 200MW from the national grid, worsening the country’s already fragile electricity supply situation. The development has raised concerns among industry players and the public over potential power shortages.
In response, Minister Jinapor held urgent talks with the management of Bridge Power Co. Limited, assuring them of the government’s commitment to resolving the financial difficulties facing the energy sector.
As a key intervention, the minister has directed that Bridge Power be included in the TIER 1 category of power producers. This move is expected to prioritize payments to the company and ensure a stable supply of electricity to the national grid.
The government now faces mounting pressure to stabilize the sector, as continued financial constraints threaten the reliability of Ghana’s power supply.
