Gabon has reaffirmed its strong diplomatic partnership with Morocco by once again backing the Kingdom’s position on the Sahara issue.
During a meeting in Rabat between the foreign ministers of both countries, Gabon reiterated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and endorsed the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the most credible solution to the dispute.
Gabon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Marie-Edith Tassyla Ye Doumbeneny, described the autonomy plan as the only realistic and sustainable basis for resolving the long-running regional issue.
Her comments came during a friendship and working visit to Morocco, where she met with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, Gabon welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025.
According to Gabon, the resolution reinforces Morocco’s autonomy proposal under the Kingdom’s sovereignty as the sole serious framework for reaching a political settlement.
The Gabonese minister also highlighted her country’s decision to open a Consulate General in Laâyoune in January 2020, describing it as a sign of growing international support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
She said the move also reflected the strong and expanding relationship between Gabon and Morocco.
Gabon’s latest position adds to the broader diplomatic momentum Morocco has built in recent years in support of its autonomy plan for the Sahara under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
