In a groundbreaking move set to transform Africa’s financial landscape, Ghanaian brokerage firm GFX Brokers has partnered with Libeara, a tokenisation platform backed by Standard Chartered Ventures, to make government-backed financial instruments more accessible to ordinary citizens.
The strategic collaboration, unveiled at the Singapore FinTech Festival, seeks to break down long-standing barriers that have excluded millions of Africans from investing in state-backed assets such as government bonds.
For decades, high minimum investment thresholds and complex administrative systems have limited access to such instruments to large institutions and high-net-worth individuals. GFX’s new initiative, powered by Libeara’s blockchain-based tokenisation technology, aims to change that.
According to a statement from GFX, the partnership will enable the digitisation of government bonds — a move that will significantly reduce transaction costs, improve transparency, and make smaller investments viable for everyday Ghanaians and Africans.
“Our mission is simple: to ensure that anyone with a smartphone and just 50 Ghana cedis can invest in their nation’s future with dignity,” said Joe Anka, CEO of GFX. “Innovation should strengthen governance, not bypass it. Inclusion should enhance integrity, not compromise it.”
By leveraging blockchain technology, GFX will allow for faster settlements, greater traceability, and stronger oversight while maintaining rigorous compliance with local and international financial standards.
The initiative is closely aligned with the Bank of Ghana’s roadmap for safe digital innovation, particularly the upcoming Virtual Asset Services Providers (VASP) Bill, which seeks to regulate digital assets and ensure strong investor protection. The Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are expected to jointly supervise such initiatives, maintaining consistency with both national laws and global best practices.
For now, GFX’s project operates within the regulatory sandbox—a controlled testing environment that allows financial innovators to trial new blockchain-based tools while safeguarding users and the financial system.
Libeara, which already supports nearly US$800 million in regulated on-chain assets, sees the partnership as a major step toward bridging Africa’s inclusion gap.
“We are proud to make headway into the African continent through this initiative,” said Aaron Gwak, Founder and CEO of Libeara. “Our goal is to ensure that access to stable, high-quality financial instruments is not a privilege, but a right for all Africans.”
GFX’s pioneering model underscores Africa’s growing role in the global financial innovation movement, where digital tools are increasingly being used to democratize wealth creation and empower citizens.
As GFX and Libeara move forward, the initiative promises not only to transform investment accessibility but also to strengthen financial governance and inclusion across the continent.
